What Now Myanmar?

I don't know how the UN or the US can really help restore democracy in Burma. The Chinese envoy to the UN has a point when he says this is not a security council issue since Burma is not threatening its neighbors. Global Civil Society, both governmental and non-governmental actors have to step in and resolve this. It is the height of hypocrisy for Singapore and China to say economic sanctions will not work. The first thing that will work quickly, if they really wanted to resolve it is to freeze the accounts of the generals...I guarantee a million percent that the generals will come running and dancing to their tune. This is the reason why I've always argued that it cannot be done by state centric solutions alone..or even freedom fighters on the ground alone. The reason global freedom fighters work so well is that they are beyond the reach of the oppressors on the ground. They are not subject to the same intimidation and do not suffer the same costs and therefore are in the best position to do more...so China and Singapore can just stuff it when they say this is an "internal" matter..
